Will Facebook lose its ‘dynasty’ in the future?

Facebook was established in 2004 in the States and became accessible for the rest of the world in 2005. For more than a decade, Facebook has been maintaining its position as the largest social network company on this planet earth with 2.3 billion monthly active users in 2018. Unfortunately, this fact might not hold true for this big fish anymore. With numerous data breached incidents, raising number of fake accounts and strong competitors, Facebook might fall off its throne anytime.

According to INQUIRER, Facebook has given access to more than 150 companies in regard of personal data of Facebook users without their consent. While Facebook did admit conducting such deals with those companies, it claimed that the deals were no longer effective since 2018. However, Facebook later changed its statement that the deals started in 2010 and are still effective in current year of 2019. Some of its dealing partners including famous company like Spotify, Netflix and even Royal Bank of Canada. Spotify said that it was able to read private messages of more than 70 million Facebook users per month. According to the survey, only 23% believe that they hold the full control of their information store on Facebook.

Another drawback to Facebook is the countless of fake accounts. Fake accounts on Facebook has been responsible for fakes news, spam, hate speech, terrorist propaganda and even online scam. Facebook announced that it has removed more than 1.5 billion fake accounts between April 2018 and September 2018, reported by TNW. Facebook also claimed that by removing fake accounts, it can reduce cyber-crime index happen on its social media platform. However, due to the continuously raising number of fake accounts, most users seem to be not buying Facebook’s statements.

Other Facebook’s cyber security issues, it is also facing competitors in the industry (Investopia). Snapchat is one of Facebook’s largest competitors. A lot of people consider Snapchat is better than Facebook privacy wise. Snapchat allows its users to fully control their own privacy, for instance, users can select some among their friends to be able to see their posts. Moreover, posting on Snapchat take less time and the posts will vanish after a period of time set by post owners. As a result, Snapchat continues growing. Facebook even tried to purchase Snapchat once after realising its potential but Snapchat rejected the offer.

A lot of consumers say that they don’t trust Facebook anymore and would turn to other social media platform because they don’t feel safe by entrusting their privacy to Facebook. Personally, I do not entrust my privacy to any social media platform including Facebook. In my opinion, if you cannot stop others from breaching your privacy, then why not protect it yourself. You should limit your contact with strangers online. You can even make up your personal information like fake names, fake contact numbers and don’t use profile pictures. As long as you don’t do any illegal online conduct and post no harm to others, I don’t see this as an issue.

According to the video of Zuckerberg’s above, soon the new privacy will be introduced but will it really work? Let me know what you think! Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Does Social Media connect us or disconnect us in real life?

What do people think? Is It connecting us? I believe that It does connect us but also disconnect us at the same time. My first thoughts of social media are that it should connect people from different places around the world, having chances to know and meet new people. It helps people to connect from one place to another no matter how far is the distance. For instance, people these days are now choosing to use social media to communicate with their lovers, families and relatives through different platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Skype more than communicate through phone calls from the telephone.

On the other side of my thought, people are not just using social media to communicate with people who live in the long distance but now using it to communicate with people who live so close to them. I have experienced it with myself, a friend of mine who’s so addicted to social media. We sat opposite to each other on a dining table, she’s barely communicated with me from face to face but vice versa she chose to communicate with people on her social media and posts Instagram of her activities. I believe that social media does connect people in social life but disconnect people in real life.

I believe that social media does give advantages to people who live in different time and location but wants to communicate, so socialising on social media is not wrong. According to Internet Relationships. Anna Pickard strongly agrees that friendships can be made through social media for some people as everybody personality is different, some people may be shy and uncomfortable to talk in front of people but more comfortable in just type and shares their lives on social media.

Nowadays social media, the internet and mobile phones are not part of our life, but people are part of them. They created a massive impact on many aspects of our lives; they change the ways we live and our behaviours toward social to the level that cannot be ignored anymore.

On the other hand, social media also gives disadvantages to some people in real life who live closer and want to spend time in real life more than social life. People are now busy with their own life on social media which is not what it used to be in the past. For instance, on the trains people are less likely to be reading newspapers anymore but now probably reading news online, checking their mails/messages and checking their social media apps.

Majority of people are now having huge friends and followers on social media but forgetting about real life friends, family and real relationships. Nowadays parents are complaining about kids are not paying attention because they are too attached to the smartphone, but on the other side parents are also doing the same, parents are also on their smartphone checking their emails/work while their kids are trying to talk to them. Social media allows us to connect with anyone in anytime and any place which affects us in losing the ability to be alone and have our privacy. As soon as we’re alone, people will immediately take their phone to check up their social media which sometimes it’s does affect people in the way that they’re losing focus and less likely to pay attention to what they have to do or think deeply. Of course, we won’t’ be able to do it with many distractions on the way trying to grab our attention. Mentioning that we do not always have to be alone but do allows private time for ourselvesare always gives us benefits.

However, I strongly believe that social media does not always give advantages to people in real life but does not mean that social media is always providing disadvantages as well. Everything is depending now how we use it and how we control and discipline ourselves from spending our time with it.

What about you?? What do you think about social media now? Please share your thought, and I would love to hear it from you!.
